Senility

Jamin,
I would be happy to at least stop leaving stuff behind. Today I managed to not
only forget my glasses at a fountain after refreshing myself on a bike trip,
but once I realised it (10 minutes later), went back and found that I also
stepped on them.

So at Guadec, please wave madly if you
see me since I will be fairly blind at a distance.

User Switching

Friday, May 27th, 2005

Putting on my UI design apprentice hat.

James,
is fast user switching going to a be a common task on a box with many user accounts? Corporate workstation? Small business file server?

Having a random workstation running an authorised session sounds like a
security problem and highly unlikely. People in corporate environment will be
locking their workstation or loging out after their session.

I am thinking fast user switching is strictly bound to a personal box. A
family computer, a single box that is used by Mom, Dad & Son. That to me
sounds like the most common case where fast user switching will be useful.

Now the question is wheather to rule out a case case of that many user accounts completely. It may well be, that a user wants to have two sessions running in parallel with a huge list of user accounts on the box.

  • Richie logs in as richie. Once the session is up and running he uses FUSA to “Log in as…” (“login screen” on your screenshot). Because the number of user accounts on the box is hight, FUSA only lists the currently loged in users.
  • Richie logs in as testaccount. Once the session is up, Richie can switch to the richie account.

Definitely start with the use scenarios. Otherwise you can drown in
combinatory sea of corner cases or even never-happens-in-life cases and the UI
will be overly complex.

Found this nice short playing with an evolution theme. Very nice style,
lovely organic shapes, amazing animation that really rides on the wave of
expectations. Amuses, warms up the soul. Two thumbs up.

Excellent sounds and music that helps with the build-up of the story. It’s
such a mood booster. Now I need to transcode it onto the PSP ;)

PS3 Demos

The thing that I found most appealing on the PS3
demos
was the video card’s material shader with stuff like subsurface
scattering
. All this madness in real time. Amazing. Combined with HDRI
lighting, that was a hell of a demo.

Took the PS3 as another modelling
practice.
This is still work in progress.

    iAudio X5

Looks like Cowon fixed the major issues I’ve had with the M3
    design
    . The new
    X5
is supposed to have menu navigation also on the body which features a nice color display. You’re not left helpless like
myself when you have the remote in
    repair
    .

The device should work as a usb host, so if you’re lucky you will be able to store photos on the device directly from your camera. Nice upgrade I’d say.

    And yes, the new
    playstation
    looks like a sexy
    beast
. Btw, I am expecting someone creating a derivate Crystal icon theme
with the faded reflection on all of the icons any day now ;) .

Update: After a closer look, it may well be, that the mini-stick on the body still only controls seeking and volume. ugh.

    Missing Puzzle Pieces

    Monday, May 16th, 2005

While upgrading a computer for Iva’s brother (from Warty to Hoary) I’ve
solved his requests to be able to burn audioCDs with gnome-baker and rip
    DVDs with thoggen.
Both packaged and ready to install in a second, amazing.

Props to the Ubuntu team, Eugenia
    & team for gnome-files, Gstreamer guys for a kick-arse
multimedia framework and all the app hackers for scratching othe people’s
itches ;) I’d hardly be able to help’im if I listened to him and installed
    Windows 98.

I was really excited to see this
    movie
played in the theatres here. It’s one of the exceptional movies you
are looking forward to see and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s not like it’s
exactly how I imagined it (I’d probably not take Iva with me) but definitely
give two thumbs up for this one. Go see it on the big screen, it’s worth
    it!

I will not spoil your experience, but have to say the movie has loads of
unforgettable scenes, is very funny at times. Very nice play on the fact that
some meaningless things for some have devastating effects for others. I’ve read
Hollywood plans to remake this (into some sort of sterile nonsense).
    Sheesh!

P.S.: Two things you will not likely do after seeing this — order
something alive in a sushi restaurant and go to a dentist. ;)

While it’s hardly to be considered an objective view, I really like the
latest NIN album. While majority of tracks is nothing new or spectacular, it’s
got everything a NIN fan expects. Exceptional tracks Beside you in
    time
and Right where it belongs should appeal to
    anyone though.

I should find some time to check out some of the remixes I mentioned
    before
. If you have any tips, I’d appreaciate your comment.

    iPod VR

    Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

Yesterday I mentioned a neat 3D VR system in javascript. So I couldn’t help
myself rendering the iPod for it. I got rid of ambient occulsion, shadows and
arealight and the 300x300px shot takes a second to render. Not too bad, not too
    bad. Yay for blender.
