Symbolic Icons
GNOME 3 introduced a new style of icons we call symbolic. Last year, Meg Ford joined the effort we kicked off with Lapo and did a great job extending the theme coverage, without us having any style guidelines in place yet. This year, we’ll have another Woman Outreach program participant joining the effort, so I’ve edited a little video introduction on how we design these icons along with a little overview of all the icon styles currently in place.

Cool! Nice video. I’m really excited about this: using a distinct style for different kinds of icons is a fantastic step in the right direction
I have one question: why are there app icons in gnome-stencils.svg? I thought this style was for category, status and action icons.

Dylan: we actually expanded the scope of what symbolic icons are used for. Now they are also a base for creating the accessible sets (high contrast, high contrast inverse…)

Thank you for sharing this instructive video! Symbolic icons are one of the things I like in Gnome the most.
