iMovie Wow

Absolute jealousy. Looks like one of the AVCHD cams isn’t a stupid buy anymore. We’ll see how long the transcoding takes though.

Indeed. I blogged about how AVCHD will eventually kill HDV here. The new iMovie is pretty good, works better than ANY free NLE, and much better than any NLE under Linux, although it is not as powerful as some consumers might need it to be. For example, you only have 1 timeline for video and 2 for audio, which is pretty constraining… Other than that, it is the easiest to use, and for simple projects, it’s the best there is.

Yeah… You look at iMovie 08 and think we should have at least something usable stable product by now. All the talk about a usable movie editor in the works on linux for 2-3yrs now. Ordered my copy of iLife 08 and will continue to wait for a video editor for linux…

incon, I agree. I wrote many times, both on my blog and on osnews, that a good *home* video editor for Linux does not exist. Something like the iMovie, or even as easy to use as MovieMaker for that matter. I had my high hopes with Diva, but the project is essentially dead.

Diva looked most promising indeed. Nokia needs to start doing phones that shoot HDV or something ;)

HD video recording is the next thing for digital cameras (only few support it right now), and phones will follow in a few years. Unfortunately, the problem is that these devices are recording in very inefficient codecs (e.g. MJPEG) and that takes a lot of space, and can easily fill up an SD or microSD card. Before we see HD 720p recording, I would first prefer to add support for AVCHD’s H.264 encoding.

BTW Jimmac, please moderate my first comment in this story. It’s stuck in moderation… :)

Why would one “think we should have at least something usable stable product by now”? Progress on a free movie editor depends on who’s willing to put in the work writing free code, not on the state of Apple’s movie editor.

If 1% of the people writing “blog[s] and on osnews” started writing code instead, we’d be done by now.

(Before you flame me for not contributing, either, consider that I’m not expecting anything like a free movie editor. My goal is to keep keep the level of Linux flaming as nasty as the level of Mac flaming, and I’m proud to report that we’re succeeding at that. And I’m contributing!)
