The purpose of this document is to give you some background on the specifics of designing accessible icons for the Gnome desktop. The primary reader target is an artist wanting to contribute to the existing High Contrast icon theme set.
I reccomend you read the icon section of the Gnome Human Interface Guidelines before proceeding with this document. It includes important aspects of icon design for Gnome that these guidelines build on.
Although nothing you'll read here is tool-specific, the original artwork is available only in SVG format (Section , “Sample Artwork”). Free software tools for editing SVG graphics include Sodipodi, Sketch and Karbon. From the proprietary world, Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator are able to export to SVG.
